Lost in translation
I spent three years leading tours in Vietnam, Cambodia, wow items Thailand, Laos, India and China, and during that time I encountered quite a bit of dodgey English, signage that made me smile, and wince inducing pictograms.
Once I started to photograph linguistic mishaps and the sillier of the signs I saw, I simply couldn't stop! Here are a few of my favourites.
Gosh, what an overreaction to an article intended as a bit of a laugh. I find it sad that so many people are quick to make assumptions about NZers being ignorant and unwilling to learn wow gold about other languages and cultures. I am a Kiwi and besides English, can speak two languages fluently and another at an advanced level. I don't appreciate being lumped in as part of an "ignorant majority". I agree with Hayz, that there are those in non-English speaking countries who are quick to ridicule foreigners without realising that they speak the language. No country - English or non-English speaking- has a monopoly on ignorance. There are unfortunate cases everywhere. As for us Kiwis, we are the first to have a laugh at ourselves. So go on, poke fun, but don't be nasty, because we certainly aren't.
I wouldn't worry, there are a lot of English speaking people in the world that can not even write English in the correct grammatical way. We should be the buy wow weapons last to point fingers at others, and instead offer to help correct other people's mistakes. Constructive criticism goes a long way to improving the world than negative criticism. At least second language speaking people are giving it a try, English is after all one of the most difficult languages to comprehend. Though you would think if your first language wasn't English you would at least ask someone who did speak, and write English, how to best convey that which you mean. It is obvious, and amusing when you don't.
It seems like a lot of people are taking the showing of these photos as an attack on the asain wow gold businesses that have helpfully translated their signage for tourists. No one is making fun of anyone (are they?) I thought it was just supposed to be a humorous look at some unfortunately translated signs. Please let me know if I'm wrong and I will immediately become outraged at this disgusting display of racism (that was sarcasm by btw people)
Also, what's with all the NZ bashing? We're not the only ones that speak english you know, and we're not the only ones that would find these signs amusing.
Pukky - publish your buy wow weapons e-mail address if you're going to tell people to e-mail you with their concerns.
I'm a New Zealander living in the UK - I pay taxes and National Insurance and wow gold I'm not eligable for any benefits and there are many chavvy 16 year olds with babies and trashy families living off benefits over here as well - the flaws that you are pointing out as your case towards your arguement about NZ can be applied to many many countries.
I'm sorry that you have obviously had a negative impression of NZ from some people - that is a shame as there are many that enjoy it greatly and get involved with many different cultures, but for you to tar a whole country with one brush is just as ignorant and arrogant as the bad people you've obviously had experiences with. If you are still living there I hope you get to meet some new people that would change your opinion and make your stay more pleasent.
